Planning Your Move

WEEK 1

• Get a notebook or large folder to organize all the details. Pockets help.
• Get several price quotes on packing, moving, truck rental.
• Decide if you will pack yourself (if so, start NOW) and find out if your mover or insurance company will insure self-packed items.
• Find out if you can deduct your moving expenses.

WEEK 2

• Start three piles: Keep, Sell, Trash. Start sorting closets, basements and storage areas into these three piles. Get these areas packed first.
• Decide whether to leave, sell, donate or ship large appliances.
• Start planning your meals around the contents of your freezer.
• Get rid of anything flammable or corrosive (paint, cleaning products, antifreeze, oil, gasoline, etc.). If your grill has a gas tank, empty it completely. If you're unsure where to get rid of these materials, ask your moving company for a local HAZMAT disposal site.
• Don't pack liquids! Don't pack candles or other soft items that might melt in the heat.

WEEK 3

• Plan a garage sale, advertise the sale and large items on Craigslist.
• Use only new boxes for packing unless used boxes are like new.
• Have your valuables appraised for insurance purposes.
• Plan on carrying your irreplaceable items in the car with you. Make sure your insurance will cover this.

WEEK 4

• Get a change of address kit from the post office. Or get one online: US Post Office Mover's Guide
• If moving out of state, research the driver's license and auto registration requirements.
• Register children in their new school and transfer their records.
• Alert your homeowner's/renter's and auto insurance companies.

WEEK 5

• Contact all organizations you belong to and transfer your membership to the new location.
• Get all medical and dental records, including x-rays so you can give them to new doctors you select in your new location.
• Make an inventory of all your possessions. Consider taking photos or a video recording as you inventory each room. Record the serial numbers of any electronic equipment.
• Start packing items you won't need between now and the move.

WEEK 6

• Get a two-month supply of medications and have your prescriptions transferred to a pharmacy in the new location.
• Ask your veterinarian about travel plans for your pets.
• Check your insurance policy for what is covered in a move. Make sure your homeowner's or renter's liability insurance covers both the new and old locations during the move.

WEEK 7

• Check with all of your local service providers (such as dry cleaners and film developers) to pick up items and settle accounts.
• Tell the utility companies when to turn off the old services and turn on the new (before your arrival).

WEEK 8

• Unplug, defrost and dry the freezer and refrigerator.
• Pack suitcases with all items you will need before the moving truck arrives in your new location.
• Prepare a special "last-on/first-off" box with any items you will need immediately upon your arrival. This should include first aid items, a sewing kit, paper, pens and pencils, scissors, packing tape, night lights, flashlight, wet wipes, paper towels, paper plates, napkins, drink cups, plastic cutlery, tissues and toilet paper.
• Take your Moving Notebook in the car with you.
• Make sure you have all contact numbers and confirmation numbers for your movers, storage, truck rental, hotel accommodations, package shipping, old neighbors, insurance companies, old utility companies and new utility companies.
